The 3 biggest remaining needs for the San Francisco 49ers heading into day three of the NFL Draft
Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

Well, we made it. It's the final day of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Of course, when the draft comes to a close, every team thinks they nailed it. Still, having addressed three needs with their first three picks and kept hold of wide receivers Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel, the San Francisco 49ers have to be feeling pretty satisfied.

Over the course of the Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch era, the 49ers have done a lot of their best work on day three, and they still have some areas they need to address with their six remaining selections.

1. Offensive tackle

The 49ers took Kansas offensive lineman Dominick Puni with their third-round selection. While he played tackle for the Jayhawks last season, the Niners plan to use him on the interior initially and believe he could have five-position upside.

As such, a true tackle who could perhaps compete to take the starting right tackle role from Colton McKivitz should be a priority for the 49ers.

Potential Options: Missouri OT Javon Foster, Texas OT Christian Jones, Oklahoma OT Walter Rouse

2. Defensive Line

For the sake of this exercise, let's group edge rusher and defensive tackle together.

The 49ers did the bulk of their work in addressing both during free agency, but depth at edge rusher behind Nick Bosa and Leonard Floyd is still an issue and San Francisco could certainly use more reserves at defensive tackle, a position where they are due to have two starters in their 30s in Javon Hargrave and Maliek Collins.

San Francisco hosted a top-30 visit with Oregon DT Brandon Dorlus, who has inside-out versatility and could be a very astute day-three addition.

Potential options: Oregon DT Brandon Dorlus, LSU DT Mekhi Wingo, Colorado State EDGE Mohamed Kamara, UCLA EDGE Gabriel Murphy

3. Safety

The 49ers haven't been shy about their desire to give themselves some insurance behind Ji'Ayir Brown and Talanoa Hufanga. They had Julian Blackmon in for a free agent visit before he re-signed with the Indianapolis Colts and had several draft prospects in for top-30 visits.

One of those prospects, Sione Vaki of Utah, is still on the board and has intriguing two-way upside with what he can do as a runner and a receiver on offense.

With several other impressive players at the position still available, it would be wise for the 49ers to add to their safety depth chart, even if they plan on signing another veteran after he draft.

Potential options: Utah S Sione Vaki, Washington State S Jaden Hicks, Texas Tech S Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, Oregon State S Kitan Oladipo
